A Night Out v. The Hangover by Jill

It’s Wednesday night.  You decide you want to come over to Olde Main for dollar pint night to see all your close friends, and have a great time.  One beer down.  Two beers.  Maybe even three! You’re feeling good, but you know it’s about that time to head home because you have a full day of work to do [or classes to attend]. You know it’s important to have a sober driver, that’s why you’ve already told your friend to come pick you up.

There’s no doubt that the ‘snooze’ button will go off about five times before you get up due to that dreadful hangover you were hoping to avoid.  But lucky for you, we have some tips on how to prevent the battle between your beer lifestyle and your body’s regret to pain.

A hangover is your body’s way of saying; “You drank way too much alcohol last night, my friend.”  This plays a significant role in weakening your immune system, and the imbalance can cause headaches, fatigue, a queasy stomach, and other regretful bodily functions.  The affects of increased alcohol consumption leave you dehydrated and malnourished, and could even be considered alcohol withdrawal.  We always encourage responsible drinking, but sometimes a hangover can still arise, so the following are some helpful tips to stay away from a negative result of drinking beer.

1) Drink water before, during, and after drinking beer.  The headache you may feel in the morning is actually a sign of dehydration, so drinking water will help the potential threat of dehydrating your body.

2) Before you go out, eat something fatty or starchy to fill your stomach and coat the lining.  This will slow down alcohol absorption and aid in digesting it.

3) Consume a glass of milk before you begin drinking.  The milk will hinder the alcohol absorption and help protect your stomach from irritation.

4) Take your vitamins! – Vitamin B can help replenish some of the lost water-soluble vitamins from dehydration.

5) Avoid drinking alcohol altogether – Ha!  That is stating the obvious. However, take into consideration drinking in moderation. This helps most people. And keep in mind … designate a driver! Or that hangover could be the least of your worries.

So if you’re willing to make your morning-after more energetic than lifeless, more conscious than unconscious, or more rewarding than punishable, try a few of these remedies to see which one better suits your body AND its hangover.

Always remember to drink responsibly. It’s not about the next beer, it’s about enjoying the one in your hand.

Drum Roll Please… by Jill

More than 300 people voted online and another 100 at the brewpub to decide the first high proof beer we brew. And the winning style is the Double IPA! Followed by the Russian Imperial Stout, Dopple Bock, Wee Heavy Scottish, and Barleywine. Thanks for everyone who voted! We appreciate your input on this very special and historic moment!

Double IPA Description: (name TBD by a special Olde Main server that won naming honors)
We took an innocent sweet little recipe for an IPA and took it to the gym. We then used muscle confusion workouts to beef it up to gratuitous levels of deliciosity. More malt and hop you say, you bet! Expect larger malt and hop profile that may put your tongue into an armbar submission hold. This Double IPA will not be for the feint of heart.

You can expect the Double IPA on tap at the restaurant and brewpub in about a month. Cheers to that!

Try out our executive chef Dan Keigley’s recipe for a Scottish Style Pot Roast made with our Off KILTer. The slight smoky roasted and malty flavors of the Off KILTer compliment the roast perfectly for a delicious dish. Give this a try and share your cooking photos and tips with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Scottish Style Pot Roast

• 1 3-4 pound chuck roast
• 1 bottle Off KILTer Scottish Ale
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 4 carrots peeled and cut into ¼ inch slices
• 4 ribs celery rough chopped
• 2 yellow onions diced
• 1 tablespoon chopped rosemary
• 1 tablespoon chopped thyme
• 1 64 ounce can beef broth

In a large skillet pour in olive oil at a medium heat, place roast into skillet and brown both sides. Add the bottle of Off KILTer and reduce heat by half. Remove roast and remaining Off KILTer and place into a large roasting pan.

Add remaining ingredients and cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 3 hours.

Remove carrots and potatoes keeping them warm. Remove roast and slice into ¼ inch slices. Place carrots, potatoes and slice roast onto a plate then ladle some of the broth over the top and enjoy!

Ye Olde Shillelagh, Irish Red Ale is Now on Tap by Jill

It’s nearly spring, which means it’s time for the Ye Olde Shillelagh, an Irish Red Ale. This spring seasonal is now on tap at the restaurant and brew pub. You can also find it a few select bars and restaurants across Iowa.

Our recipe celebrates the tradition of Irish Red Ales by providing a complex, yet easy-drinking beer, characterized by moderate maltiness and low-to-moderate hop bitterness for a delicious deep auburn ale. Try it with corned beef sandwiches, pizza, barbeque, and any foods that aren’t too sweet.
