So, yeah… sorry. We underestimated how awesome you all are. We didn’t realize just how fast you folks were going to make the Reindeer Fuel disappear. So it’s gone… for now.
Please bear with us. We are currently rocking and rolling on another batch of Reindeer Fuel as we speak! As soon as it’s ready to go, you folks will be the first to know. You can still find the Reindeer Fuel at DG’s Taphouse in Ames, and we did get wind that El Bait Shop in Des Moines may have some also. Watch our Facebook and Twitter for confirmation, we’ll post there as soon know for sure.
In the meantime, please enjoy our other fine offerings including the new “Fatty Nichols Uber Pils” – the big beer with the big name. This 8.5% abv lager is named after Ames’ “weightiest resident,” George Nichols aka “Fatty.” In the early 1900′s he had his own side show at county and state fairs, weighing in at over 500 pounds and was reported to have a seven-foot waist line.
With a name like “Fatty Nichols” we had to brew a big beer. Citrus notes in the nose from American hops give way to a bold 8.5% abv lager with some spicy alcohol overtones. Warning this “fatty” sized libation should be handled with care. Drink in moderation.
Once again, we’re sorry. We’ll fix it. We promise. Come in and try the Fatty Nichols Uber Pils. We think you’ll love it!
Love,
The Brewhouse

Our hard pressed cider is back on tap at the brewpub. You may remember it from earlier this year. This dry English-style cider will not only refresh your thirst but will satisfy the ‘apple-a-day’ requirement. With tart hints of Granny Smith apples and a subtle sweetness, Hard Pressed will satisfy the discriminating cider palate.
Hard Pressed is made with apples grown and pressed at Deal’s Orchard in Jefferson, Iowa. The juice makes a short journey to White Oak Vineyards in Elkhart, Iowa where it is fermented with care by talented winemakers. Once fermented, the juice is transported to Olde Main Brewing Co. where final preparations are made before serving. Locally produced and fermented, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better one.

We will tap a honey porter firkin on Thursday, January 21 at 6pm at the restaurant and brewpub. It’s the same porter used in the Reindeer Fuel, but without the chocolate. The porter has been infused with honey and has been aging for weeks, which should give it a unique and different kind of sweetness compared to the chocolate in the Reindeer Fuel.
Firkin tappings are free for Olde Main Union Members. You can sign up for membership anytime at the brewery. It’s just $30 to join and includes tons of discounts, a t-shirt, and free bragging rights. Get all the details here.
What’s a firkin you may ask? It’s an old style wooden mini-keg with nine imperial gallons (10.8 US gallons) of delicousity. To tap the firkin we pick one lucky member of the crowd to hammer in the old fashioned tap through a special wooden seal. The firkins are always filled with a one-of-a-kind beer concocted by Olde Main’s brewers. Once it is gone it is lost forever, which could be a few hours or even less.
Check out pictures from the last firkin on our Facebook page.

Locally grown whole kernel rye and wheat are featured in our new brew Sir Plus Ale. The pre-prohibition style ale is now on tap and is the featured firkin for Beer Union members tonight.
At the brewpub last year, Puff (Olde Main head brewer) got to talking with local farmer Pete Lawlor of PM Grains about his hobby farm near Polk City. Pete began recycling our empty grain bags to make PM Grains deliveries and started a crop of rye and wheat. After the crop was harvested Pete brought it to Olde Main to be processed for our new beer.
It’s called Sir Plus Ale due to the surplus grains that went into making the brew. Raw rye and wheat make up half of this ale. Add some light base barley malt and a light colored, easy-drinking ale results. The hop aroma comes from a newly released hop called Celeia, a hybrid of an existing variety and a wild Slovenian hop plant. Sir Plus Ale has a light straw color and delightful hop aroma. The taste is very refreshing and light with a gentle smooth bitterness that dances across the palate. They rye and wheat add subtle dimensions to the flavor’s overall character.
Stop in the restaurant and brewpub for a pint or take home a growler.

Another brewhouse creation exclusively for the restaurant and brewpub is now on tap. The Dark Helmet is a delicious schwarzbier (black beer) that treats the drinker to an ultra-smooth, velvety lager that features chocolate and coffee notes. Finishing very clean, this easy-drinking, moderately hopped black beer lends itself to session consumption… in other words, go ahead – have another.

Take 150 gallons of the Sodbuster Stout and let the good distillers of the southeast add their subtle nuances during barrel aging. The Sodbuster has been aged a year in a used bourbon American white oak cask. The aging adds subtle wood, vanilla, and bourbon flavors that blend well with the roast flavors found in our stout. Sip and enjoy! But, hurry because there is a very limited amount and it will go fast!
