Olde Main Celebrates American Craft Beer Week, May 17-23 by Jill

American Craft Beer Week is the “Mother of All Beer Weeks.” It’s a time to celebrate small and independent craft brewers and highlight all that the U.S. loves about craft beer. Here at Olde Main we’ve got a few things planned from a cook off to a specialty firkin. Come join us to cheers with a pint of Olde Main brew!

Special Craft Beer Week Firkin Tapping – Thursday, May 20, 5-8pm
- A firkin filled with a one-of-a-kind beer concocted by Olde main’s brewers will be tapped. A firkin is an old style wooden mini-keg with nine imperial gallons (10.8 US gallons). To tap the firkin you hammer in the old fashioned tap through a special wooden seal.
- A beer quiz will determine who gets to tap the firkin. People can submit their answers online or at the brewery from 5/17-5/19. The person with the highest score will win tapping rights to the firkin and Olde Main merchandise. But, remember you must be present to win! More details on the beer quiz coming soon.

Brewery Tours – Saturday, May 22, 2-4pm
- Olde Main brewers will give free brewery tours to share the process of how Olde Main beer is made from grain to bottle.

Stew Your Brew Cook Off – Saturday, May 22, 2-5pm
- Olde Main cooks and brewers will judge the Stew Your Brew Cook Off to determine the best dish made with Olde Main beer. Entrants must submit the dish they plan to bring to the Cook Off online or at the brewery by 5/19.
- Prizes will be awarded to the top three dishes: 1st place – $50 gift card, t-shirt, pint glasses, recipe on website and e-newsletter, and used as a one-time lunch or dinner special at the restaurant; 2nd place – $20 gift card, t-shirt, and recipe on the website; 3rd place – $10 gift card, t-shirt, and recipe on the website

Starting next month we will start doing a firkin tapping regularly on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Start marking your calendars so you don’t miss them!

Honey Porter Firkin Tapping January 21 by Jill

We will tap a honey porter firkin on Thursday, January 21 at 6pm at the restaurant and brewpub. It’s the same porter used in the Reindeer Fuel, but without the chocolate. The porter has been infused with honey and has been aging for weeks, which should give it a unique and different kind of sweetness compared to the chocolate in the Reindeer Fuel.

Firkin tappings are free for Olde Main Union Members. You can sign up for membership anytime at the brewery. It’s just $30 to join and includes tons of discounts, a t-shirt, and free bragging rights. Get all the details here.

What’s a firkin you may ask? It’s an old style wooden mini-keg with nine imperial gallons (10.8 US gallons) of delicousity. To tap the firkin we pick one lucky member of the crowd to hammer in the old fashioned tap through a special wooden seal. The firkins are always filled with a one-of-a-kind beer concocted by Olde Main’s brewers. Once it is gone it is lost forever, which could be a few hours or even less.

Check out pictures from the last firkin on our Facebook page.

While you are thinking about delicious Olde Main beers today, be sure to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter, Another Round for special offers, recipes, news, event announcements, and other fun beer stuff.

Celebrate American Craft Beer Week by Jill

ACBW_logoAmerican Craft Beer Week (May 11-17), is a national celebration highlighting the culture and contributions of craft beer. Brewers hope the week inspires beer lovers to declare their independence by supporting breweries that produce fewer than 2 million barrels of beer a year and are independently owned.

Come to Olde Main on Thursday, May 14 from 5-8pm to take a tour of the brewery, participate in the tapping of a firkin of Clone Pale Ale, taste more than 8 beers on tap, and take home a growler or six-pack. Add this event to your Facebook page.

Also be on the look out for the launch of the Iowa Brewer’s Guild’s new website IowaBeer.org. The site will feature all the breweries in Iowa, as well as a blog, event calendar, beer education, and a forum to discuss everything about Iowa beer. The Iowa Brewer’s Guild will also a launch an Iowa Beer Facebook page and Twitter account.

Tapping the Firkin by Jill

Last night we had an authentic night of beer drinking with the tapping of the firkin.

Every month we hand tap a firkin, which is nine imperial gallons (10.8 US gallons) of delicousity. This is an old timey way of serving beer. You physically pound in the old fashioned tap through a special wooden seal (called the keystone). The firkin is always filled with a one-of-a-kind beer concocted by Olde Main’s brewers. Once it is gone it is lost forever, which could be a few hours or even less.

This month we had the Gryphonbraü Lager aged over used bourbon barrel staves (the narrow strips of wood that make a barrel) soaked in port wine. The staves were soaked in port for two days prior to the Gryphonbraü being added, producing an amazing rich oak flavor with subtle sweet port wine flavors.

Firkin nights are for union members (The Local 316 ½ Beer Drinkers Union) only and is only $30 a year to join. This includes all sorts of fun perks. Stop by Olde Main Brewing  Co. & Restaurant and inquire within.
