We hope you can join us to celebrate next week. We’ll kick things off with an event at the brewpub on Wednesday. We’re also taking the festivities to Des Moines on Thursday at Mars Cafe and Friday at El Bait Shop. (See event details at the bottom of this post.) Our Stout Ale, formerly known as To Be Named Later Stout, was named last year during our Name the Stout contest. The winner was Mike from St. Charles, Iowa, with the Sodbuster. What’s a Sodbuster? It’s a slang term for a farmer, which is reflected in the new logo. All of our beer logos are designed by local artist Chuck Taylor. We love what he’s done with the new Sodbuster design and look forward to seeing it in bars, restaurants, retail stores, and in beer lovers’ hands!
A big thanks to the folks over at Saturday Mfg. for the spectacular promotional campaign materials. They developed a stellar campaign and you’ll soon see coasters, table tents, posters, and a couple advertisements popping up around town to celebrate the bottle release!
We also want to throw a thank you to Doll Distributing for helping us make the Sodbuster available. A ton of gratitude sent from us to all the bars, restaurants, and retail stores for carrying the product! And of course, we want to give a big hug and high five to all the Olde Main beer lovers out there. We couldn’t do it without you and appreciate you supporting a local brewery!
We hope you can try our newest bottled product sometime soon! And when you do, please let us know what you think! Tweets, Facebook posts, and photos are encouraged!
Cheers!

Take 150 gallons of the Sodbuster Stout and let the good distillers of the southeast add their subtle nuances during barrel aging. The Sodbuster has been aged a year in a used bourbon American white oak cask. The aging adds subtle wood, vanilla, and bourbon flavors that blend well with the roast flavors found in our stout. Sip and enjoy! But, hurry because there is a very limited amount and it will go fast!
What’s currently on tap at the restaurant and pub:
- Dinkey Wheat, Belgian Style Wheat Ale
- Long Face, Amber Ale
- Off KILTer, Scottish Ale
- Clone, Pale Ale
- Sodbuster, Stout Ale
- Gryphonbraü, American Lager
- Red Monkey, Root Beer
- Bourbon Aged Sodbuster (brewpub exclusive)
- Yub Nub, Vanilla Lager (brewpub exclusive)
- Coming soon: Der Festen, Oktoberfest (seasonal)

Veteran Olde Main beer drinkers came to know and love the To Be Named Later Stout. When the brewery opened in 2004, head brewer, Jeff “Puff” Irvin had to quickly come up with a bunch of names for the beers he had created. For some reason, the stout stumped him, thus the name To Be Named Later Stout was born. While the name has stuck, it was time to give this brew a proper name! Since Olde Main brewers like to spend more time making delicious beer, the naming was left up to Olde Main beer drinkers and the Name the Stout contest was born.
More than 1,500 names were submitted to NameTheStout.com between February 1st and March 31st. After hours of deliberating over delicious Olde Main brews, the winner Sodbuster Stout was chosen. Mike from Saint Charles, Iowa, submitted the name and has won free Olde Main beer for a year and a big party at Olde Main Brewing Co. & Restaurant in Ames.
A new logo for the Sodbuster Stout is currently in development and will be released in early June. Olde Main plans to begin bottling the Stout later this year.
Olde Main would like to thank Mike and all of the beer drinkers that entered and award everyone for their creative beer-naming abilities.
